VIROLAB: GridwiseTech joins the fight against HIV

Friday, 27 January 2006

Virolab is one of the most revolutionary projects GridwiseTech have undertaken to work on this year. Virolab is a Grid-based Virtual Laboratory for Decision Support in Viral Disease Treatment that benefits medical knowledge discovery and decision support for, e.g., HIV resistance, starting on 1 March, 2006. The virtual lab will be a fundamental tool enabling scientists to share and distribute information to help acquire data bringing the medical world a few steps closer to finding cures for diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

The Virtual Laboratory endorses tools for statistical analysis, visualization, modeling and simulation, to prognosticate the temporal virological and immunological response of viruses with complex mutation patterns to drug therapy. Equipping medical doctors with a decision support system classing drugs targeted at patients, and providing virologists with an advanced environment to study trends on an individual, population and epidemiological level is the core function and objective of the Grid’s architecture.

GridwiseTech is proud to be part of such a beneficial project. Only by means of a Grid-based service, which we are developing for Virolab, is the integration of biomedical information, patients, and literature made possible on a vast scale. GridwiseTech has been invited to the consortium owing to its unique experience in building grids. The present undertaking provides an exclusive model which can be adopted in research for many diseases where genetic information will be significant in the future.
